During the week of Oct. 6-12, police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than the age of 21.

During the week of Oct. 6-12, police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 8; Kona, 5; Puna, 3; and South Kohala, 2.

So far this year, there have been 909 DUI arrests compared to 1,020 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.9 percent.

There have been 1,215 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,085 during the same period last year, an increase of 12 percent.

So far this year, there have been nine official traffic fatalities compared to 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 60.9 percent.

To date, six of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving — three to drugs and another three to a combination of drugs and alcohol.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
